A Letter … from the Horse to the Farmer!

Zalán Kaposvári

Dear Master,

I am writing for your help in a matter of great importance. I have been planning to ask it for about two months now. I know I am your most adored creature on this whole farm (of which I have no doubt), so I think the time has come for you to ’give back’ the help that I have been lending you for 51 years, 234 days and 8 hours so far.

As I have already told you, I want to help you a lot with as many problems as I can, and I also want to thank you for those many heartwarming words of yours, they really always put the soul in me, when carrying those heavy bags and barrels full of beer and other bad stuff. What is more, knowing that I am the strongest and largest horse in the farm makes me think I am the king or your right hand here.

Furthermore, if I ever wanted to complain about my accomodation, I had literally no cause to do so, as, to list some points, my stable is extremely large, spacious, and also full of those little or narrow places where the sun can examine my beautiful body and amazing nature. Actually, there is a lot of sunshine here every day (probably the sun has found no other nice horse like me!). By the way, I can also consider myself lucky because, compared to the others on the farm, I have plenty of food every day.

Let’s start to get to the point of my wonderful letter. It is in connection with my new friends. If I am right, according to my memories, you do not know my friends yet. I know you always laughed when I mentioned that I would like to have some trustworthy friends just as you do, and no, I still do not want to have those dirty, ’mud-filled’, smelly pigs as my talking partners. And the other horses on this farm do not suit my sensitive taste. I have a little story about my wonderful, new friends!

The first one in the order is Bird. One morning, after the journey to the local town with all those heavy goods, I was very tired and was reluctant to get up, even though I was thirsty. However, I heard a peculiar sound outside the stables. It was amazingly beautiful, enough for me to decide to get up. When I looked outside, I saw a bird perching and singing on one of the branches of the high and old oak tree. I immediately asked him if he could do it every morning for me. Finally, we made a deal, and I got what I wanted.

For Cat, the bravest deeds of all was when my ’room’ became a tactical target for those evil mice and rats. When Cat saw the bad situation, she decided to hunt all of them down, so she could eat them. This was symbiosis.

The next one is Bear. I had another bad day and bad mood when I ran into the nearby forest to find something interesting and new. Well, I managed to: gunfires could be heard from the distant plains, and as time passed by, I met some evil men, who had a lot of animals with them. (I am sure you haven’t seen anything like this: those people held those rabbits by their long, fluffy ears in their hands, and all of the white little ones were sleeping, like nothing had happened!) They wanted me, but before they could do something to me, Bear came out from his cave and scared them away with his frightening roar.

Finally, my last such good friend is Fish. I was again after some new things one day. It was summer, so without any grey and white flaws in the blue sky, it was so hot that I started sweating, thus I got thirsty. There was the nice, local lake nearby, so I started drinking from it. If I remember correctly, the horse with the brown dots on his back tried his best to push me into the small lake. However, Fish suddenly and unexpectedly jumped out of the water, splashing cold water on both of us. I liked it, because it cooled me faster, although the other one by my side seemed to disagree; he immediately ran off, and hopefully he also noted that he ought not to mess with me and Fish!

Oh, a thousand pardons! I haven’t got to the point yet. My stupid brain! So, I would like to ask you something. May I invite my four best friends over, so that we can finally have fun together? I really hope you say yes. I would then write a letter to each of them (Now that Owl taught me how!) to let them know the exact place, time, and other stuff. It will take place near the lake in which Fish lives, so that circumstances won’t cause him any difficulty. What is more, it would be best, if you ask me, to have it scheduled around dinner time. Furthermore, I would like to have a wonderful dinner, like you people do every evenings: your whole family gathers, you eat tasty things and you also have  great fun while talking about different topics. And guess what! I think I already have the whole menu in my head. Now I just need to ask Mr. Fox and Mrs. Bunny to get the appropriate ingredients, and Sheep to cook everything. Nevertheless, you don’t have to worry, since I can arrange the deals with each of them.

Oh no…I have just read through my letter. It got extremely long. I simply don’t understand: Owl told me not to consider anything, just simply write everything I had in my mind regarding the topic. Your letters do not look like this. They are nice, pretty, short and long enough. Anyways, I hope you get my letter in time, even if you are away for the time being. I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Your best horse
